Multiple lanes of I-5 were closed early Wednesday morning after a crash involving two trucks. The accident was so severe the Seattle Fire Department was performed extraction to remove a victim from one vehicle.
Washington State Police said the accident occurred in the northbound lanes of I-5 near the Mercer Street exit. The accident took place just before 4 a.m. when one driver plowed into a construction zone, collided with a construction vehicle, and then crashed head-on into a concrete road divider.

The driver of the pickup truck, who is assumed responsible for the crash, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Harborview Medical Center. The occupants of the construction vehicle had only minor injuries. Their status is unknown.
Alcohol use is believed to be a factor in the cause of the crash. The pickup driver was taken into custody. Washington State Patrol is currently investigating the sequence of events that led up to the crash.
Traffic along I-5 cleared around 5:30 a.m., just before the morning rush hour.
