A crash over the weekend caused the death of a local track star. The deceased was identified as Journey Tueller,17, and was a member of the Medical Lake High School track team. Three other members were injured in the crash: Lauren Gross, 17, Laci Sica, 15, and Savannah Sutton, 14.
Washington State Patrol said the SUV transporting the track team was traveling south down Wood Road when they drove through a stop sign directly into traffic along Highway 2. They were instantly t-boned by a Ford truck driving east on Highway 2.
All four members of the track team were wearing seatbelts. The driver of the Ford truck, Lloyd Jones, 37, was treated at the scene of the accident and released. The surviving occupants of the SUV were rushed to Sacred Heart Memorial with serious injuries.
Washington State Patrol said the accident was the fault of the driver of the Kia Sorento, which was transporting the track members to their track meet. The Kia is reported to have pulled out onto Highway 2.
A candlelight vigil was held Saturday night at Medical Lake High’s track in honor of Tueller’s passing. The track team opted out of the track meet with neighboring Cheney High due to the accident.
