If you’ve ever walked through Westlake, you’ve probably noticed how many different types of traffic share the same streets. Office workers, shoppers, tourists, buses, delivery vehicles, cyclists, and Link Light Rail passengers all converge within just a few downtown blocks every day. While vehicles generally move at lower speeds than in other parts of Seattle, the constant interaction between different road users creates its own set of risks.

Unlike neighborhoods where high-speed crashes are more common, accidents in Westlake tend to happen in busy commercial corridors where visibility, turning vehicles, and distracted driving become bigger concerns. Most collisions here are relatively minor, but even low-speed crashes can lead to injuries and complicated liability questions.

2025 Accident Snapshot in Westlake (and Early 2026 Trends)

Compared with many Seattle neighborhoods, Westlake experienced relatively few reported collisions during 2025.

According to Washington State Department of Transportation data, Seattle recorded approximately 7,264 traffic collisions during 2025. Within the boundaries of Westlake, generally defined by Crockett Street, Aurora Avenue North, and Aloha Street, just over 20 crashes were reported.

Perhaps more notable than the total number of crashes is their severity. Every reported collision resulted in either possible minor injuries or no apparent injuries, making Westlake one of the city’s lower-severity neighborhoods from a traffic safety perspective.

2025 Overview

  • Total reported crashes: 20+
  • Approximately one-third involved distracted driving
  • 1 pedestrian collision (minor injury)
  • 1 alcohol-related crash
  • 1 heavy truck collision
  • 0 motorcycle crashes
  • 0 bus crashes
  • Wednesdays and Saturdays recorded the highest number of incidents

Although pedestrian activity in Westlake is among the highest in Seattle, only one pedestrian-related collision was reported during 2025. That proportion is noticeably lower than many other central Seattle neighborhoods, where pedestrians and cyclists make up a larger share of injury crashes.

Where Crashes Tend to Happen

Aurora Avenue North accounted for roughly half of all reported crashes, continuing its reputation as one of Seattle’s busiest urban roadways. Westlake Avenue North (5) and Dexter Avenue North (4)  followed behind, while even very short streets like Garfield Street appeared repeatedly in the collision data.

The pattern suggests that crashes are less about neighborhood streets themselves and more about the connections between Westlake and the surrounding transportation network. Early 2026 Trends

Crash activity has remained relatively low through the first seven months of 2026.

So far, only seven crashes have been reported:

  • 1 serious injury collision
  • 1 minor injury collision
  • 5 collisions with no apparent injuries

One location has already appeared more than once: the intersection of Dexter Avenue North and Aloha Street, where two crashes have been recorded during 2026.

While it’s too early to identify a long-term trend, the data continues to suggest that Westlake experiences relatively low crash volumes compared with other Seattle neighborhoods.

What Makes Westlake Different?

Unlike many Seattle neighborhoods, Westlake’s biggest traffic challenge isn’t speed or impaired driving. Thousands of people move through the district every day using different forms of transportation. Light rail passengers cross streets alongside shoppers, buses navigate tight downtown turns, delivery trucks service nearby businesses, and cyclists share space with commuters entering and leaving South Lake Union.

Even when collisions are relatively minor, determining who is legally responsible isn’t always straightforward. Left-turn crashes, distracted driving, commercial vehicles, and multiple insurance carriers can all complicate what initially appears to be a simple accident. Before accepting an insurance settlement, contact The Advocates for a free case evaluation. An experienced personal injury attorney can review your accident and explain your legal options at no cost.

 Notable Westlake-Area Accident Cases

Metro Bus Crashes into Westlake Sephora Following Hit-and-Run

One of Westlake’s most unusual crashes happened in September 2025 when a reckless driver struck a King County Metro bus near Westlake Center before fleeing the scene. The impact forced the bus off the roadway and into a Sephora storefront, highlighting how a single collision in Seattle’s busy downtown core can quickly endanger passengers, pedestrians, and nearby businesses.

Lime Bike Riders Critically Injured Near Westlake Gateway

In April 2026, two people riding a shared Lime bike were critically injured after colliding with a truck on Aurora Avenue North, just north of Westlake. While the crash occurred outside the neighborhood itself, Aurora is one of the main corridors leading into Westlake and is part of Seattle’s Vision Zero High Injury Network, underscoring the risks cyclists and micromobility users face when traveling to and from the district.
