A Washington State Patrol trooper was hurt in a crash caused by a suspected drunk driver Sunday morning on State Route 525. The crash took place just before 9 a.m. and left both the trooper and the driver who caused the crash injured and in need of medical treatment.
Washington officials said Trooper Brent Campbell was checking for speed violations while parked along the shoulder of the northbound Highway 525 lanes when a Subaru Impreza hit the back of his Washington State Police Ford Explorer. The Subaru then caught fire and had to be extinguished by the South Snohomish County Fire and Rescue. Witnesses said the Subaru drifted across the highway before striking the trooper’s SUV.
Neither driver suffered potentially fatal injuries, but were rushed to Swedish Edmonds for treatment. The driver in the Subaru is reported to have been injured more than Trooper Campbell.

Investigators are looking into the possibility that the driver of the Subaru was intoxicated at the time of the crash.
