Tips for Commuting Safely in Winter Storms

winter driveDriving in winter storms can be equal parts daunting and dangerous. White knuckle commutes are often unavoidable in the working world, and the risk of accidents is extremely high if you do not take the proper precautions. It is important to be familiar with your car and to know some safety guidelines before you get behind the wheel. AAA offer some safety guidelines for drivers traveling during winter storms.

Winter Driving Tips from AAA

  • Accelerate and decelerate slowly. When you accelerate, it helps to press the gas slowly to assist your car in regaining traction and avoiding skids.
  • Give yourself plenty of space and time to slow your car down on icy roads.
  • Be familiar with your brake system.
  • Make sure your tires are inflated properly.
  • Avoid using cruise control on icy or wet roads.
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full at all times.
  • Pack an emergency kit with the following items: cell phone, blankets, gloves, hats, food, water and any medication you might need.
  • Always buckle up!
  • If possible, stay home. It is much safer, and warmer!
Whether you are going on a long road trip or just commuting home from work, always use extreme caution and take your time. Remember, it will always take longer to commute during winter storms so be sure to plan ahead and do not rush to your destination.
