A tanker truck transporting over 5,000 gallons of gasoline turned over late Wednesday night in an accident beneath the West Seattle Bridge. Almost immediately, the tanker truck began to spill gas onto the roadway. No one was reported to have been injured in the accident.
The accident took place at the intersection of Delridge Way SW and Chelan Avenue SW. Seattle firefighters rushed to the scene and immediately began spraying it down with foam to prevent the fumes from igniting.
“At this time we don’t know exactly how much has leaked, that will only be determined when they offload the remaining product and they can see how much they have left over,” said Hilton Almond, a representative of the Seattle Fire Department. “Right now, we have slowed the leak down. It is still leaking at this time. We have the owner of the truck has sent a responsible party to help offload that material.”

Firefighters were initially concerned the gasoline fumes would ignite and potentially explode, causing damage to the West Seattle Bridge. Once this concern was abated, the focus shifted to the environmental impact caused by the gasoline entering the local water drain system.
“The gasoline that did leak did get into a storm drain that feeds into the Duwamish,” said Almond. “We had a crew check the Duwamish, as well as had a company go up to the shore, right now they report that there are no signs of any foam or gasoline on the water.”
City of Seattle authorities are fairly certain some of the spilled gasoline will eventually end up in local rivers.
The Delridge Way off-ramp on the West Seattle Bridge was closed for much of Thursday morning.
