Seattle Police was forced to close down two residential streets last week when the truck carrying massive 2-pound steel ball bearings suddenly lost its cargo. Several motorists traveling on the street at the time were stunned to see a cascade of the steel balls race down the street and damage their vehicles.
Authorities said the driver transporting the steel ball bearings took a wrong turn and attempted to drive up a steep hill on Genesee Street. The change in incline seemed to have jarred the ball bearings loose and sent them crashing out of the back of the truck. Witnesses to the accident described a stream of steel balls rolling, bouncing, and clanking down the narrow street as they collided with any vehicle in their path. Several videos of the accident were posted shortly thereafter on social media.
“I looked up the street and there was a sea of balls rolling down the hill making an incredible noise and hitting the cars that are here,” said local resident Robert Duffy.
In total, six vehicles were damaged in the accident. Local residents were shut out of Genesee Street by police until the ball bearings could be cleaned up. According to estimates, the total amount of escaped ball bearings reportedly weighed just under 50,000 pounds.

The driver was eventually fined $136 for not properly securing the cargo he was transporting.
“Called 9-1-1 and they said ‘Oh are you that guy with all the balls rolling down its street?’ And I go, ‘yeah, that’s me,’” said Robert Herman, the driver responsible for the accident.
