Interstate 90 was shut down after a serious crash involving a semi truck blocked both directions for hours. Washington State Patrol said the accident occurred early afternoon on Wednesday after the semi truck lost its load of junked cars across the interstate.
The semi truck driver told Washington State Patrol that the crash happened because he had been cut off by a silver Chevy just west of the Lincoln Street exit. The driver swerved to prevent a crash, causing the trailer of junked cars to swing, strike the median, and spill junked cars into the eastbound lanes of I-90. Washington State Patrol said the crushed car struck four cars traveling eastward. The owner of the silver Chevy has yet to be identified.
When asked about the situation, Washington State Trooper Jeff Sevigney said, “Sounds like a mess.”

Seven people were reported to have been injured in the crash, though none with serious injuries. Multiple crash victims were reported to have been transported to nearby hospitals.Heidi Martin, the owner of Jim Martin Trucking, of whom the semi truck driver is employed, said they were not cited for any infractions of traffic law and that the truck had successfully passed a Level I on-scene inspection.
Emergency responders from the Spokane Fire Department arrived just before 1 p.m. The crushed cars were eventually removed by wrecking crews and tow trucks by late afternoon. Traffic was cleared shortly thereafter.
