A pregnant woman was killed in a crash late Sunday evening near North Bend, Washington. Washington State Patrol said three other people were injured in the crash, the pregnant woman’s husband and her two children. Her pregnancy did not survive the crash.
The deceased woman has been identified as Alyssa Helfenstein, 27, from Moses Lake. Washington State Patrol said the crash was a single-car accident. Helfenstein is reported to have lost control of her car, a Mitsubishi Galant, due to the heavy snow and ice falling on I-90. The car then struck a guardrail and then slid 20 feet down into a nearby embankment.
When emergency responders arrived at the scene they pronounced Helfenstein to be dead. Helfenstein’s husband, 31, and her two children, 3 and 5, were transported to Seattle to be treated for minor injuries at Harborview Medical Center. They were later released.
Washington State Police do not believe alcohol or drug use is to blame for the crash. Instead, they believe excessive speed along with the inclement weather is the likely cause of the crash. Upwards of 20 crashes and spinouts were reported on I-90 Sunday evening. A number of crashes have occurred due to the recent heavy snow and hail in the Puget Sound Convergence Zone.I-90 was closed for hours while Washington State Department of Transportation worked to clear the wreckage from the crash.
