A deadly crash in South Seattle left one teenager dead and traffic along State Route 99 snarled for miles. The crash was so destructive a gigantic freeway sign was knocked over in the aftermath.
Washington State troopers first began to hear reports of a massive highway sign being down across Highway 99 just after 10:30 p.m. Thursday night. When they arrived at the scene they found a wrecked 2008 BMW burning on the side of the highway. The driver, 17-year-old Jonathan Tesorueda from Seattle, died in the crash.
Investigators with Washington State Patrol believe excessive speed is the cause of the crash. Witnesses reported that the Tesorueda lost control of his vehicle and hit the highway sign with such force that debris rained down on cars traveling nearby. The BMW reportedly burst into flames immediately upon impact.
Repair crews worked overnight to remove the fallen sign from Highway 99, but weren’t able to clear the lanes until 9 a.m. Friday morning.
