Truck Loses Control and Injures 4 People in Pioneer Square
Five people were injured Monday, August 19 when a large dump truck violently crashed into a Seattle Subway restaurant. The crash occurred around 9:30 a.m. in the Pioneer Square neighborhood.
According to the Seattle Police Department, the truck had a “catastrophic mechanical failure” and completely lost control of the brakes. The truck was seen careening the steep hills of James Street at 40 mph, striking three cars in its path before smashing into the Seattle Subway restaurant.
Kyle Lewis, a worker nearby told King 5 news, “All of the sudden, I saw a dump truck coming about 40 miles an hour, with lost brakes, took out these two cars and hit someone up the street that was crossing the street.”
One of the victims, a 25-year-old woman, who was hit by this massive vehicle was trapped inside her van while witnesses tried to help her out. Others were in complete shock.
“It was crazy,” said Lewis. “I’ve never seen anything like that in my life.”
A 33-year-old male pedestrian, who was hit at Second Avenue and James Street, a 51-year-old male pedestrian and a 44-year-old employee inside the Subway restaurant were all seriously injured and taken to nearby to Harborview Medical Center. Thankfully, the three men were in stable condition when they were taken to the hospital.
Police said that the driver of the Barrett Services dump truck suffered very minor injuries and had only a few cuts on her. She was “bleeding a little” but was able to walk.
Seattle Fire Department needed to evacuate the building, which included residential and commercial businesses, so they could begin extricating the dump truck from inside.
Bruce Burns, 58, was inside his apartment when he felt the truck hit the Subway restaurant below.
“I looked out my window and I could see the air bags had deployed on a couple of vehicles,” Burns said. “It was carnage down there.”
The dump truck left a striking amount of damage along its path, leaving the Seattle Subway Restaurant practically irreparable and four victims seriously injured.
