Two brothers were killed in a wrong-way crash late Monday night. Several other people were injured in the crash, which occurred along State Route 516 in Kent, Washington.
Washington State Patrol said the crash happened around 11:30 p.m. When first responders arrived at the scene they found multiple damaged vehicles. The multi-car crash was reported to have been caused when the Toyota Camry steered by one of the two deceased brothers, Freddie Ili, 36, and Faalfua Ili, 38, drove eastbound in the westbound lane of Route 516 and struck a Lexus RX. The Camry next hit a Nissan Altima carrying a mother and a child. The Camry then nearly hit a Chevy Cobalt, but the Cobalt swerved at the last minute, hit the guardrail, and then crashed into the Altima.
“Any vehicle traveling 30, 40, 50 miles per hour in the opposite direction,” said WSP Trooper Rick Johnson. “You’re going to be near a 100 mile per hour collision speed, so it’s a pretty horrific scene.”
The passengers in the Lexus, Altima, and Cobalt were all transported to the hospital, many with serious injuries. The child in the Altima is reported to have a broken femur and wrist. One of the other crash victims was listed as being in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center.
The two brothers in the Camry died at the scene. Detectives are investigating if alcohol or drug use is to blame for the crash.
State Route 516 was shut for over six hours as the scene of the crash was cleared.
